I'll remedy that right now! Effective immediately, the dry old, uninspiringly titled "Wednesday Quotes" will be replaced by the much more effective "Thursday Thoughts". Just rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? In order that you, dear reader, should not have to wait 8 long days for a new quote, you'll get a "two-fer" this week. Today's quote comes from the book "Your Mind Matters" by John R. W. Stott. Far from being anti-emotional, this short book responds to the tendency of some Christians to leave their reason in "park" for fear of developing a dry religion. I highly recommend it:
"...the fact that man's mind is fallen is no excuse for a retreat from thought into emotion, for the emotional side of man's nature is equally fallen. Indeed, sin has more dangerous effects on our faculty of feeling than on our faculty of thinking, because our opinions are more easily checked and regulated by revealed truth than our experiences."

the preacher in me definitely likes Thursday Thoughts. and the consumer in me gloats in the two-fer...
ReplyDeletei appreciate Stott's suggestion (another quote title?) that we "retreat from thought into emotion". My simple observation is that God is pleased for us to emote. Otherwise, why would He grant incredible texture to nature and humanity?
I'm all about glorifying God emotionally as well as rationally. Far from advocating stoicism, the point of Stott's book (and I agree) is that we shouldn't be "anti-reason". I've told you about some of the churches I grew up in, hm...? Some would have done well to read and heed this book. :)
